Nose2Brain – Better Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis

Over the next few years, in a research project funded by the EU, an international consortium is developing a new technology for a better treatment of multiple sclerosis. The idea of the innovative "Nose2Brain" approach is to transport a special active substance directly through the nose into the central nervous system. For this purpose, the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB is working on an active ingredient formulation which is introduced direct into the Regio olfactoria by means of a special applicator and which can release the active ingredient there over a prolonged period of time.

Medically active substances are normally distributed via the blood – either directly by injection into the bloodstream or indirectly, for example through the digestive tract after oral administration. In many diseases, however – for example of the central nervous system – it is of decisive importance to transport the active substance as efficiently as possible to the required target site. An example of this is the treatment of multiple sclerosis, where the pharmaceutical agents have to produce their effect above all in the central nervous system. However, this is especially difficult to achieve in the usual way via the blood due to special protective mechanisms such as the blood-brain barrier...

EU fördert Entwicklung neuer Wirkstoff-Technologie

Von der Nase ins Gehirn: Mit einem neuen Verfahren sollen Wirkstoffe gegen MS zielgenauer ins zentrale Nervensystem transportiert werden. Die Entwicklung ist bis 2020 geplant.

STUTTGART. Für eine bessere Behandlung von Multipler Sklerose will ein internationales Konsortium bis 2020 eine neue Technologie entwickeln. Der Ansatz namens "Nose2Brain" sieht vor, einen speziellen Wirkstoff direkt über die Nase in das zentrale Nervensystem zu transportieren, wie das Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB mitteilt. Das Foschungsprojekt wird von der Europäischen Union gefördert.

Zu diesem Zweck arbeitet das Fraunhofer-Institut für Grenzflächen- und Bioverfahrenstechnik IGB an einer Wirkstoffformulierung, die den Wirkstoff mittels eines speziellen Applikators direkt in der Regio olfactoria anbringt und dort den Wirkstoff über einen längeren Zeitraum abgeben kann.

Dieser alternative Ansatz solle es einem Wirkstoff ermöglichen, den Weg über das Blut und damit die Blut-Hirn-Schranke zu umgehen und direkt ins Gehirn zu gelangen. Denn das Gehirn mit der umgebenden Flüssigkeit ist an dieser Stelle nur durch das Siebbein und einige Zellschichten von der Nasenhöhle getrennt. Der Wirkstoff kann diese Barriere einfach durchdringen und das Gehirn auf kurzem Wege direkt erreichen...
